 2023 Preview

Coosa Christian completed the 2022 season with a 9-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region seven, the Conquerors earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Coosa Christian made a nice playoff run in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Pickens County team by the score of 44-40.

The Conquerors improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2018. The Conquerors won as many games as in any season since 2009. It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Conquerors qualified for the playoffs. The Conquerors had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points. The Conquerors hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach OBryant saw improvement as they won nine games following a 4-6 record in 2021.

Since 2010, the Coosa Christian football program has struggled with a record of 46-91.

Over the past 25 seasons, Coosa Christian has managed to compile a record of 102-152. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 1A and 286th in the AHSAA.

The Conquerors will be under the direction of new head football coach Mark OBryant as they enter the 2023 season.   Over the course of his career, Coach OBryant's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

Coosa Christian was literally a play away from the 1A championship a year ago when they fell, on the road, to Pickens County 44-40. The Conquerors caught a lot of fans and opponents by surprise in 2022. That will not be the case this fall. The good news is that Coosa Christian could possibly be better in 2023.

A tough schedule early with Geraldine and Spring Garden will serve to get the players ready for a playoff run once again this fall. A midseason visit from 4-time state champion Heritage Academy (MS) Patriots will truly be a test for the Conquerors. Coosa Christian lost six seniors to graduation but will return enough talent to be one of the best teams if they can remain healthy. The Conquerors have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 61-49 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 1A and 82nd in the AHSAA.

The Conquerors should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

The Conquerors open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Geraldine on Thursday, August 24 at Coolidge-Isbell Field. Last year the Geraldine Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in third place in Class 3A region six. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 27-7.

Coosa Christian and Geraldine have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Conquerors have a 0-2-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Geraldine winning by a score of 36-7.

Coosa Christian lost 1A All-State  running back Jy Mostella to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive lineman Drake Albury.

The Conquerors return 1A All-State Junior linebacker Clete OBryant. He was named to the first team last season.
